Tan's "Mothers Tongue" is an argument because she is "arguing" that it is a different language, or different form of a language. The language being english. She argues this by showing the effects that the way her mother speaks had on her everyday life. One example was when her mom was at the doctor for results from a CAT scan and they had lost the scan. The doctors were going to make her come back later for another and schedule a later appointment. But when she made the doctor call her daughter who spoke clear english the doctor was more willing to work with the mom.

Avoiding Fallacies

The idea for my paper is that having a pet is better for a family then not.

Ad Hominem- If someone states that having a pet does not affect a family. I will not say that they are wrong rather I will say points that prove otherwise.

Stereotyping- I will avoid the stereotypes of the putting the types of pets that certain people have, such as rich people have small dogs just for show.

Faulty Sampling- I would not interview everyone in my neighborhood about how not owning or owning a pet affects them because they all have pets.

Sweeping Generalizations-will not say EVERYONE loves having a pet

False Dilemma- I can't assume that people either have a pet or don't have a pet. A family may have had one and are not ready to get another one.

Pos Hoc/Ergo Propter Hoc-Cannot assume every time someone has a pet they are happy

Answers for Disco

1. What was critics take on disco music in the 1970's?-Carlos

Critics thought that disco was to "repetitive, commercial, mechanical, and trivial" it was to similar to rock and roll. Saying that these were bad things even though Rock and roll was succesful so why couldnt diso be?

2. The text is titled, " Who Really Won the War," but as you read it doesn't give a definite answer, so who do you think won?-Matt

Rock and Roll obviously won the long term war because it has survived through more generations. But I think Disco won the war during the seventies because it appealed to more people. When something has a bigger market it is going to do better. Even though disco was only a phase. Although it did leave it's impact of clubs and its spontaneous beats. Rock and Roll will just always be Rock and Roll.

1. Why does Disco appeal to more groups of people, then Rock and Roll which appeals to mostly men?

2. How did Disco help shape modern dance clubs today that play rap and hip-hop?

I have always struggled with gramatical issues in a paper, so the section on "Then Common Things to Avoid in Research Papers" was especially helpful. It will help me to look for specific elements in my paper that may be problem areas that could really detract from my paper. A major point was not being vague in your sentences and making sure your audience knows who and what you are talking about. Also, I need to look for words that come in different forms such as their/there/they're an its/it's.

I thought the section about writing a good ending was helpful because I have always struggled with this part of a paper. I usually will just repeat what I had already stated throughout the paper. I especially liked the idea of returning to the beging of the paper and using the ideas of what you discussed to support or disprove what you originally stated.

In chapter 3 a passage that I thought was important was about paraphrasing. I have definitely paraphrased before they way that you are not supposed to by copying words directly from the passage that makes it look more plagiarized than paraphrased. I learned that it is ok the take key words rather phrases. Also even if you are paraphrasing you should still tag the author or actually site the source the quote you are paraphrasing. I used to never do this when paraphrasing in past research papers.

I thought there were two sections that were really helpful one section was on how to decide whether internet sources are trustworthy enough to be used in a research paper. I thought the flowchart that was provided was especially helpful to eliminate sites as well as look at ones that may be questionable.

The other part that I found helpful was how to write a thesis. I have always had trouble writing one. One thing is to look at the type of paper that you are writing will affect the type of thesis that you write.

I thought this was a very well spoken speech. I have always thought that using life lessons to teach others is the most productive way to get through to someone. It really spoke to me because over the past couple of days I have been having a lot of doubt as to whether I am on the right path here at MSU. I feel like I am closing myself off to so many opportunities by having such a selective major, zoology. His idea that everything falls into place later in life really spoke to me. It makes me feel like I can relax and just concentrate on my life at this moment and not on my life later.

Question #3 Character-

The author presents himself as someone who values human interaction because he states that even when he goes to call a number such as a toll-free number and he does not know the person on the other line, he still values being a rational human being with them. He shows this by saying he wants that person to be able to answer any questions he may have or even be able to joke with him. But this valued human interaction cannot exists if there is a robot on the other end. He also states that you could now get through a phone call with never speaking to a "living, breathing, human being." This could imply that he as a person enjoys the contact with "living, breathing, human being." In this way he values human interaction.

The last paragraph is interesting because the author David Pellicane states that "nobody reads because nobody cares" but this statement makes me think about Facebook. Our generation spends hours a day on this site reading other peoples profiles commenting on others statues that may have no relation to our lives. We all have like he said "top ten list, favorite movies, lyrics, links and album covers." For him he was trying to stay connected with friends. For me Facebook is a huge way for me to stay connected with people because I have a large amount of close friends out of state. I have not seen many of them for two or three years now and the amount we have in common has decreased but I still like to know what is going on in their lives. Facebook makes this possible. I am interested to browse their web pages to learn about their current lives to stay connected unlike he said.

malcolm X quickpost 9/22

Question 1:

Malcolm X's frustration with his limited vocabulary was that he could be successful on the street but he could not be successful in everyday jobs. This is because he could not communicate with people who did not live on the street. My frustration with not being able to comunicate happens to me a lot when I am called on in class. I will have a point in my head and a way to express it but when I go to talk about it all those ideas just leave. I am left searching for what to say. I have experienced this a lot in this class. Sometimes I think I just need to slow down and think about what I say before I do.

Karen's viewpoint is reflected in her CV first of all her specialization is on Bioethics, Ethics and Development, also she has done multiple presentations of the topic such as her Considering Virtue: Public Health and Clinical Ethics. Her rhetorical choices in her CV reflect her philosophy because she puts topics that relate to it closer to the top. For example she puts things that relate to Ethics closer to the top, such as in education or in her specialization.

The difference between an argument and a persuasion is that when you are arguing a point you are trying to figure out the truth but persuasion is when you know the truth and you are trying to convince someone else to understand that truth.

A CV or Resume is an argument is because you are arguing that you are trying to argue the truth you are the right person for a job or postion.

My general reaction to "Where I Come From is like This" was that as a girl she was raised with values of an American, but her mom wanted to make sure that she still understood the values of Native American women. I feel that she was also conflicted because the Anglo-Europeans and the Native American views were so different.

It also relates to me as a human because being a women I am still accepted into society at any point in time. I do not know how I would feel if I were shunned away once a month just for being a women. It also relates to my religion because according to it, women are considered unclean during menstruation. But as an american's and a modern society we do not believe this anymore.
