The author presents himself as someone who values human interaction because he states that even when he goes to call a number such as a toll-free number and he does not know the person on the other line, he still values being a rational human being with them. He shows this by saying he wants that person to be able to answer any questions he may have or even be able to joke with him. But this valued human interaction cannot exists if there is a robot on the other end. He also states that you could now get through a phone call with never speaking to a "living, breathing, human being." This could imply that he as a person enjoys the contact with "living, breathing, human being." In this way he values human interaction.
I agree with what you said here. While reading the article i also thought that he valued human interaction about everything else. I think that humans can better cater to specific needs than a robot ever could and for this reason companies should have humans answering their calls. This would make every reaction more personal and people like the author would be more satisfied.
