One thing that I took from chapter two of The Curious Researcher was that it is important to make contacts if I wanted to include an interview in my paper, which is something I am considering. I am going to have to find a pediatric nurse to answer some questions I may have about my research topic, and this chapter talked about ways in which I could establish important contacts and how to go about interviewing them. The tips given were helpful, such as don't ask loaded questions or questions that are too vague.

Reaction

This speech was extremely motivational and even a little emotional! Steve talked about how there is no way to connect the dots too early in life, because nothing is going to make sense. You have to let things play out for themselves, because you can't always control what happens. However, it is important to take control of the things that you can, and steer them the way you want to, because that is the only way you will ever be satisfied. I liked the quote about how you should live every day as if it were your last, because someday it will be your last, and if you are lucky enough, or you have worked hard enough, you will be happy to be doing whatever it is you're doing on your last day alive.

-We believe that death may be a subject that can be difficult to explain in words, since everyone that is alive is distant from the actual feelings of the matter.

-During an interview you may find that you struggle with using the “right” words when talking to the employer.

-In language classes you have to give an oral exam and that can be frustrated if you are foreign to the language.

Reaction

-We thought that it was interesting that he taught himself the American language and usage of proper grammar/punctuation. He used the dictionary as a teacher and became intrigued with learning the words and definitions of modern English. He described the dictionary as a "mini-encyclopedia," since it gives information in the definitions.

- The difference between and argument and persuasion is that an argument is not as much always trying to convince someone of something as it is to trying to make someone see your point of view. Persuasion is more so trying to get somebody to agree with the way you think.

- A CV or resume is an argument because you are proving, explaining, and defending yourself to someone and trying to impress them with your experience or knowledge.

A nursing CV in France is pretty similar to that of U.S. The most important factor is work experience and education. Then they look at achievements, activities, and volunteer work. The only difference was that being bilingual was more important in France's resume.

Nurses in Germany structure their resumes similarly to an American one also. An example shoed how a man stated his background information, studies, and previous experience in the field. The only differences I noticed were that he listed his hobbies and other languages he could speak at the bottom in order to further prove his experience and qualification in the field.

Global revisions are are revisions that you make such as the content and information in the paper. Local revisions are revisions made that have to do with things like punctuation, grammar, and spelling.

My general reaction to this piece was that I was surprised. I thought it was going to talk about how women felt inferior to men quite often, but it actually talked more about why women should not. It went into detail describing the ways in which women are powerful and can be equal to or even greater than men. The girl who wrote it kept recalling memories of which her mother was capable of quite a bit which made her think that that is what a woman should and can be. This is not always true though in all societies; some people do believe that women are lesser, but this essay made women look strong and self-reliant and I really liked that.

About Me

My name is Sara Boydell and I am a freshman at MSU. My major is pre-nursing and I live in West Wilson. I chose Michigan State because both my sisters go here and I've heard nothing but good things about it. I also wanted to go to a big school because I love going to sporting events and being apart of a large community. I love the school spirit that comes with MSU. Outside of school, I like to play tennis, swim, spend time with my family and friends, and I love music. I am very excited about being here at MSU and I am hoping to have a great experience!
