In my opinion the main battle in modern music is between Rock and Hip Hop. They are really opposing kinds of music. One focuses on the guitar riffs and the other one on a heavy beat.
I can see how disco and rock could have a dispute. Most of the time, rock music has a consistent beat which is basically disco or dance music. And I agree with Sebastian above that in modern time, the dispute is between rock and hip hop. They are totally different but people look at the little things like a similar beat and automatically think they are the same.
