I found this kind of interesting, because personally I hear situations like this all the time. Especially since going to MSU I hear broken english all the time. I think this piece was pretty real according to how people who cannot speak fluent English are judged. I also liked that the author considered herself to be literate in all fo the different forms she knew. She knew fluent English, broken English, and she said watered down Chinese. It was a cool reading.

My reaction to this piece was indifferent. There were some things that I agreed with, while other things I did not. I think she did make valid arguments though, and things she believes are real occurring things that need change. According to Atwood, "I won't go into the reasons why I think your recent Iraq adventures have been - taking the long view - an ill-advised tactical error" (p. 3). Many people could probably agree with this sentence, even if they do not agree with all of her other views. This sentence touches on a pretty serious issue though America has had to deal with over the years. I completely disagree with her however when Atwood says, "You are gutting the constitution" (p. 3). I think that leaders have to do what they feel best, but I don't believe you should ever word something where it seems like they are not taking the best interest of America to heart. There were parts of her letter that made me want to stop reading it, and there were also parts of letter that really made good points.

As of right now my topic for the paper is going to be: An argument about why student teachers are more helpful than professors.

1. Ad Hominem - I can avoid this by not attacking someone who thought that a professor was more help because I do not think they are a good person.

2. Stereotyping - I won't make accusations like how all professors are old or something that doesn't help my point of helpfulness.

3. Faulty sampling - If I want to use data I will make sure that it is a reliable sample. If they only interviewed ten people, the sample isn't very good.

4. Sweeping Generalizations - I have to be careful not to include an "everyone" statement, because some people may not prefer student teachers over professors.

5. False Dilemma - This one I will have to actually think about while writing my paper because I can't really see it being a problem so it will probably sneak in there.

6. Post hoc/Ergo Propter Hoc - There will be many examples of student teachers and professors, so I have to be careful not to create a cause and effect scenario for my reasons.

Quick Write 11-22

I really found the section about inductive and deductive reasoning helpful for me. A specific argument is deductive and the argumentative essay as a whole is inductive. Inductive reasoning is good for when there is needed repetition to prove your point. Having example after example will increase the reasons behind your argument. Inductive reasoning was said to, "establish a high degree of probability for the general truths it infers." (8)

I think this is important to the paper because it really will help to organize your points and give you a couple different ways to put them. You can use deductive reasoning at points like for example in your conclusion, and for the majority of your paper you can use inductive reasoning.

In what major ways to bands rely on products? -Nicholas

Bands rely on products for reasons such as advertisement and sponsorship. If something well known, like Nike, sponsors your band, people who are brand loyal to Nike may begin to pay more attention to your band as well. On the other hand though, people who may prefer Adidas, will pay little attention to your bands conjoint ad with Nike.

One of my questions form the reading is, why was disco referred to cultures such as gay, black, and Latin? Disco music, as I have heard of it before was just a popular genre, so why is it suddenly being labeled as a type of music for certain culture groups. Also, why was disco claimed so homosexual, when it thrives in clubs where there are many heterosexual people? My last question is, are the rhythms in disco music similar to rhythms in African American Culture? It was mentioned in the last paragraph that they are drawn from African Americans.

The fact that there is newer and better hardware available to us everyday. There is always a new phone with better internet, or a new computer that claims to last longer. For example, Apple had created the ipad and then the ipad too. They are also on their 5th type of iphone. I am not very technology savvy so the constant upgrades are often confusing for me. Since our remix assignment has to do with technology it was relevant to read this article. It probably won't be the easiest assignment since I don't really mesh with technological things.

I really thought that the ten common things to avoid in research papers. I really liked colons and semicolons. I have been known to misuse semicolons, so it was good to learn a little more about them. I think i often used them more like a comma, and that is not grammatically correct. I think I have always understood the use of colons much better. Subject and verb agreement is also something I have always needed to pay more attention to. Since that is necessary to understand to form proper sentences I was glad to read about it.

In this chapter I found the delayed thesis structure to be helpful. This method helps you to identify and understand the things you were confused about in your topic. Since it is asking questions it really focuses in on making sure you really know what you will be talking about. It will help to simplify your writing and get your points across easier. My favorite question in this structure is, "What one thing do I most want to say about what I now understand?" This question gives you the main point for your paper that you can then expand on throughout the rest of it.

I really liked the section about plagiarism. Although I already know a lot about it, it was interesting to read and see helpful tips on how to avoid it. Sometimes you may be plagiarizing someone unintentionally, just because you did not cite correctly or you though you didn't need it there. I think the most helpful tip was for paraphrasing. Even if you word something slightly different, you need to give credit to the person who thought the idea up. I will make sure that I am constantly citing material I am using just to be careful because it is really easy to plagiarize, especially during research papers.

I found the way to identify valuable sources would be helpful for me. I thought the chart really helped me to understand how to choose articles that will give me good and most likely truthful information. I found in interesting that you should always look to see if it has an author. If the author is nonexistent it will most likely not be as useful. There are other important things to look for as well like: government, peer revisions, educational organizations, etc. If the article you are looking at does not say yes to any of these things, then it is most likely not a credible source.

the e-mail

The incidents with racial issues are very disturbing. I was kind of uneasy when I read the e-mail. It really doesn’t make sense to me why people do these kinds of things. It upsets me because when you look at MSU as a community, these are the kinds of things that will characterize us as a school. Even though it may only be a few people or a lot of people, it doesn’t mean that everyone has issues with this. Reading the e-mail made me feel discouraged and disappointed in people that have such immaturity and unneeded hatred.

Logic - question 1

The author supports that voice messaging systems are "dangerous" due to the fact that they reduce basic human interaction. He proves this through reminding the reader that as a consumer, when you used to call toll free lines in the menus there was only an intermediate step before quick contact with a sales representative. Now though, you will have menu after menu. For example: if you need this: press one, if you need to contact this: press 4 and then 2. He then concludes this thought by saying once you are done your call, you never really had any contact with a real human being.

Quick write 9/27

In the last two paragraphs David Pellicane talks about the internet leaves, "no dynamic between reader and audience. The exact opposite of a community." I see where he means that there is so much that goes on and it often not personal or important, that it ends up lacking any real person-to-person contact. I like how he said that, "The important stuff in our lives happened while we weren't paying attention to the TV." I agree with that because most of the memorable things happen when we are out in the world interacting, not staring at computer screens or TVs. Most of the things that take place on the web or commercials have no relation to our lives or have the information that could eventually have an effect on us.

1. The difference between and argument and persuasion is that an argument is not always in attempt to convince someone of something. Sometimes arguments are just ways of expressing your point of view, and other times they are used to convince facts. With persuasion though, it is an argument that is meant to influence the people it is presented to.

2. A CV and resume can be considered arguments, because you are presenting something in a way that is meant to prove you are worthy. The reason you make CV's and resumes are so you can get jobs and make employers believe you can handle the tasks they want accomplished. Hopefully you will be able to get the point across and they will hire you, since your argument of your characteristics and achievements was so good.

CV's in Greece

In Greece a CV will look similar to a CV in America. Depending on the job you are applying for will determine if it should be in English or Greek. The CV will be in chronological order from your first job to your most recent. You don't include references, because you wait until you have an interview to give them that. You also should indicate if you have served in the military at all. Just like in America, the CV's are detailed.

In the Netherlands, you must have your CV in Dutch, unless you are otherwise instructed. It needs to be in chronological order and must be factual. A daytime phone number with an international access code must be included. This is obviously different than Greece's CV requirements. You should also include power words and action verbs. It is very common in the Netherlands to mostly apply for jobs online.
