My first reaction to this piece, was the cultural differences Paula Gunn Allen was trying to portray. I thought that her description of the two opposing cultural definitions of women were really interesting. The misunderstanding that white americans have towards Indian women I felt was very personal to her. One of the most interesting parts of the piece was when she talked about family and child birth. In our society today, if a girl is pregnant outside of marriage it is often that the father will not stay in the picture, or often the baby will not either. Indian culture embraces all births, and all the family will help to make sure the baby is raised properly. It was compelling to try to understand the difference in culture coming from someone who has experienced both sides.
