My first general reaction to this story was my sympathy towards Paula for having to endure the hardships of being conflicted and a combination of two very different backgrounds. I understood this on a personal level because on my mother's side of my family there is a lot of hurt mostly all directed at the abandoning of my mother's father which lead to a messy divorce. Now her family is all about making your own way, being tough, lots of drive, ambition, and not taking crap from anyone. And on my father's side there is a family that grew up with all the luxuries a family can have in a growing business with as few confrontations as a person can imagine. In opposition to my mother's view my father was raised to be very calm, easy going, peaceful, and having an idea that everything will work out. Similar to Paula with these very different practices and values I find it can be very hard to stay unbiased towards a particular attitude and to not dismiss the other.
